Dental Program

"Many of the problems I see did not start off as medical problems. They're dental problems that turned into something worse because the people weren't able to take care of them."

Visit a remote village in Mexico and you'll see young children with pearly white teeth and adults with few or no teeth left. A poor diet and lack of dental care have lead to decay and infection. The Bacaanda Dental Program provides free care to children and adults who would otherwise be unable to visit a dentist. In 2010 the Bacaanda Foundation opened dental clinics in San Felipe Lachillo and Santiago Xanica where a certified dentist now performs cleanings, fillings, and when necessary, extractions. Our reward is happy, healthy smiles!

Bacaanda Sports Club

"Thank you very much for the uniforms you sent with your friends. I have dreamed of having a well equiped team and thanks to you my teammates and I have uniforms so we can play better."

-Jose Andres, Captain of the newly formed San Felipe Lachillo Boys' soccer team

The Bacaanda Sports Club was created as a result of a simple questions asked of the children of San Felipe- "What would you most like to see for your village and yourselves?" Both boys and girls voted overwhelmingly for soccer teams. When training with volunteers coached started a problem emerged. Children were coming to play soccer in the only clothes they had available, in many cases flip-flops and jeans.

Thanks in part to generous donations made by the chidren of Concord and Carlisle Massachusetts, the Bacaanda Foundation has been able to outfit three full teams with uniforms, cleats, balls and other soccer equipment. Through our ongoing soccer clinics and gear donation program we are creating more opportunities for children to experience the joys of playing on a team with their friends.

Kristin reading to children

Books are a luxury not easily afforded in many rural Mexican villages. The Bacaanda Foundation supplies arts and educational enrichment so that children can develop the skills for a brighter, fuller future.

"I was amazed at how few books were available in the village we visited. Their entire library fit on one small folding table."

"The banana plants you helped us with are starting to grow fruit. We can't wait to start harvesting them to sell!"

-A local farmer

The lack of jobs in many rural Mexican villages has forced families apart as fathers, sons and brothers make the long trek to the city, or even the US to find work to support their families. The foundation is helping to create sustainable work opportunities in these home villages so that families may have the option to stay together.
